Understanding Juneteenth
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, proclaiming freedom for all enslaved individuals in the state. This historic proclamation came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln. Juneteenth symbolizes the belated realization of freedom for those who had been enslaved and serves as a reminder of the enduring struggle for equality and justice.
Juneteenth was signed into law in New Jersey back in 2020. In New Jersey, Juneteenth is observed on the 3rd Friday of June, which will be June 21, 2024. The Federal Juneteenth holiday is observed on June 19th, unless it falls on a weekend in which case it will be the following Monday.
